Gold Krugerrand coins were first minted in 1967 by the Republic of South Africa and contained a gold alloy of exactly one troy ounce of 22 karat (91.67% pure) gold (approx. 33 grams) and 2.826 grams of copper bringing the total weight of the one ounce Krugerrand to exactly 1.0909 troy ounces. Copper is added to the Krugerrand for durability. Krugerrands actually weigh in a little over a Troy ounce, Krugerrands have no face value, but are traded based on current gold prices. Krugerrands feature a profile of Paul Kruger, an early South African President. Three smaller sizes of Krugerrands were introduced in 1980 including 1/2 OZ, 1/4 OZ. and 1/10 OZ.

Limited edition Collector Krugerrands are produced by the South African Mint Company and are typically valued and traded above current gold prices. The serrations on the edges of the limited collector Krugerrands number at 220 whereas serrations on the edges of the bullion Krugerrand number at 180.

Krugerrands are a widely used vehicle in gold investment because they can be obtained at low percentage premiums above the current gold price.
